Happy holiday season, Chota fans! For the month of November, we are focusing on holiday gift guides in our blogs. With new products on the way and one last trade show for Christmas shopping, this is the perfect time of year to treat your friends, family, or even yourself to some brand new fly fishing gear.
For this week’s blog, we’re going to focus on the amazing fly fishing women in our lives. As a female fly fisher myself, I have definitely noticed more women attending trade shows, testing fly rods at casting ponds, and sharing their knowledge as casting instructors and guides. Product companies, therefore, have been responding by offering more female-friendly apparel, boots, waders, and other vital fishing gear to give us more options.
Here at Chota Outdoor Gear, our products are intended to be equally usable by both men and women, but we have noticed that some of our boots tend to sell particularly well with women. As such, we are bringing you our best recommendations for wading boots for female fly fishers of all experience levels. These recommendations are based on my personal experiences and also the numerous female fly fishers, including competitive anglers and guides, that we speak with at trade shows.
Note about sizing: The boot sizes you see on our website are men’s shoe sizes. Therefore, we generally recommend that women go down by one size if ordering online, but definitely try to find a dealer near you if possible to ensure that you get the best fit. I personally wear a ladies’ size 10, so size 9 Chota boots fit me perfectly.
STL Plus Wading Boots
Why Women Love Them: When we’re at trade shows, we like to talk with current customers and gather their feedback on their favorite Chota products. Overwhelmingly, we’ve had an enthusiastically positively response from men and women alike on our best-selling STL Plus Wading Boots, particularly from guides and tournament fishers.
If you want to get the most return on your investment in a long-term pair of fly fishing boots, then you can’t go wrong the STL Plus Wading Boots. With durable leather uppers, superior arch and ankle support, and sturdy felt soles, we’ve heard numerous accounts of full-time guides using these boots for 5-10+ years. The felt soles also feature cleat receptacles to give you even more traction on slippery stream beds, and the QuickLace system makes wearing these boots as easy as sliding on slippers and tightening a drawstring.
STL Light Wading Boots
Why women love them: Whenever I consider a new hobby, sport, or extracurricular activity, I like to dip my toes in first before taking the plunge immediately, and that’s usually due to the monetary cost of the activity in question. Why spend a lot of money on gear for something that I may or may not continue pursuing? And then for the more serious sports or hobbies, I love having backups for my primary gear, whether that’s an extra life jacket, fishing rod, or critical piece of safety gear.
If you or someone you know is new to fly fishing, then the STL Light Wading Boots give you all the features that you need to quickly begin enjoying your waders at a budget-friendly price tag, including standard laces and bonded polypropylene felt soles. But you won’t sacrifice durability at this price tag. The boots’ 900 denier material and nubuck PU overlays are made to last for many years, making these boots an excellent go-to or backup pair for experienced anglers as well. But the best part is their minimal weight. At 1.25 pounds, these boots are popular choices for women who want less weight around their ankles and a stylish black-and-gray color scheme.
Caney Fork Wading Boots
Why Women Love Them: Anytime I purchase an article of clothing, whether it’s a shirt, pair of pants, or shoes, I try to envision as many possible uses for it as possible. If I can’t come up with at least two or three different ways to wear or use the item, then it goes back on the shelf. I also look for pieces that I believe will last for many years to maximize my monetary investment.
Those are the exact reasons why I chose the Caney Fork Wading Boots as my first pair of Chota boots. While I personally prefer felt soles for fly fishing, the Caney Fork boots are a great alternative for streams where felt soles are banned, and they offer cleat receptacles to increase the traction of the sturdy rubber soles. These boots are also incredibly comfortable. They have the best ankle and arch support of any shoes that I own, so I have worn them on trade show floors, where I’m on my feet all day, as well as hiking the trails near my home. I have even worn them as snow boots with my Chota waders because they were more comfortable and waterproof than my actual snow boots.
If I could make the case for them being business attire, I would love to wear them to work too!
Hybrid High-Top Wading Boots
Why Women Love Them: I had the pleasure of test-driving a pair of the Hybrid High-Top Felt-Soled Wading Boots, or Chota 14s for short, in New Mexico this past summer, and they are definitely my new go-to fly fishing and kayak fishing boots. We call them Chota 14s because each boot is only 14 ounces, and they combine the most popular features of many of our other best-selling Chota boots into one compact package. They have the mesh panels of the Hybrid Felt-Soled Wading Shoes, the high tops of our other boots for added ankle support, the light weight of the STL “Light” Wading Boots, and the QuickLace system of our STL “Plus” and Caney Fork Wading Boots. Despite their minimal weight, the Chota 14s felt perfectly sturdy and durable while kayak fishing and wading the narrow streams and tall grasses of the Chama, New Mexico high country, and I definitely appreciated carrying less weight around my ankles at the end of each day.
The Chota 14s have a removable insole to accommodate waders, or you can wear them as-is for wet wading and kayak fishing. These boots also come in a rubber-soled version, dubbed the Chota 15s, and the rubber soles work perfectly on hiking trails as well.
Hybrid Felt-Soled Wading Shoes
Why Women Love Them: Do you love your sneakers or tennis shoes? Do you wish you could do everything in sneakers? Well, we can at least make you feel like you’re wearing sneakers while fly fishing in our Hybrid Felt-Soled Wading Shoes. These fly fishing shoes offer the same functionality and inspired much of the design of the Hybrid High-Top boots, with the mesh panels for wet wading, QuickLace system, and sturdy felt soles. Their low-profile design offers unparalleled flexibility while wearing waders, and they fit neatly into the most compact kayak cockpits. If you love wading sandals but hate the feel of gravel and grit getting into your shoes, then these shoes will be your new go-to water-based footwear!
